Liverpool have won just 3 of their last 20 European away ties.
Liverpool were held to a draw by Sevilla in their opening game and have been dire travellers in Europe in recent times, winning just three of 20 European away games since 2010/11, despite the fact that the majority of these were in the Europa League. Given their stuttering form at the start of the season – they’re winless in four in all competitions since the international break (ahead of their trip to Leicester) – we’re looking to take them on and so we’re siding with Spartak on the Double Chance.
Spartak Moscow-Draw
Spartak Moscow v Liverpool [Double Chance]
This is Spartak’s first appearance in the Champions League since 2012/13, where they struggled but did manage to beat Benfica at home, while English clubs generally have a poor record when travelling to Russia. They’re W4-D6-L5 since 2011/12 with four draws in six since 2014/15. Indeed, it’s the stalemate we like most, particularly as Liverpool have drawn six of their last nine European away matches.
Draw
Spartak Moscow v Liverpool
Surprisingly, Liverpool have a strong ‘unders’ trend on the road in Europe under Klopp with six of their seven games seeing fewer than three goals and four with fewer than two, including two bore-draws. That’s admittedly a small sample size but Liverpool have looked a side bereft of confidence after the hammering they took at the Etihad. Spartak will no doubt set themselves up to be tough to break down and we think they’ll have some success, and so Under 2.5 Goals looks a great bet but we’re going to go further and make the 0-0 correct score our longshot.
