The best bets from the second weekend of the German top flight
Bayer Leverkusen v Hoffenheim (Saturday)
It was a hugely disappointing season for Leverkusen last term and as a result it’s been a summer of upheaval for them with two of their best attackers in Calhanoglu and Chicharito leaving the club, though the combination of a fully fit Bellarabi, as well as Brandt and Volland should ensure they retain an attacking verve. Indeed, their matches averaged 3.2 goals last term and that looks set to continue as their new manager Heiko Herrlich led Jahn Regensburg to promotion from the third tier last season, despite conceding as many goals as FSV Frankfurt, who finished rock bottom. Both teams scored in 14 of Hoffenheim’s 17 road games last term, while eight of Leverkusen’s home matches saw more than three goals – we’re backing Over 3.5 Goals.
Tip: Over 3.5

Werder Bremen v Bayern Munich (Saturday)
Bremen’s games last term saw an average of 3.7 goals, significantly more than any other team, and whilst they scored plenty of goals to get themselves out of trouble, they had the worst defensive record despite finishing up in 8th. They lost but managed to score when hosting three of the top four last term (including in a 2-1 defeat to Bayern) and they in fact netted in all but one of their 17 home games. Given that Lahm and Alonso are now retired, Boateng is still out injured and Martinez is only just back in training, Bayern could be vulnerable defensively in the early stages of the season, with Leverkusen managing to net against them at the Allianz on the opening day. However, they had no such problems at the other end of the pitch and we’re backing Bayern to win and both teams to score.

RB Leipzig v Freiburg (Sunday)
Leipzig failed to keep a clean sheet in their final 12 away matches last term and that trend continued as they went down 2-0 at Schalke on the opening day. However, prior to their final home game last season they’d conceded just 11 times at the Red Bull Arena, winning six times there without conceding. With no major players leaving and having brought in another crop of talented youngsters, the most exciting of which looks to be Bruma from Galatasaray, we expect them to have another good season. Freiburg stayed up comfortably last term after winning the 2.Bundesliga in 2016 but they struggled against the top teams, losing all six of their clashes with the top-three and conceding 20 goals in the process. Indeed, Leipzig put eight past them and so we’re backing Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men to cover the -1 handicap, as they did in seven of their last 10 home wins last term.
Tip: RB Leipzig -1
