ENGLAND: Championship

Aston Villa vs Brentford

It will be a clash of unbeaten sides when Aston Villa (fifth, seven points) host Brentford (fourth, seven points) in the Championship.

After starting the season with two consecutive wins, Villa were then held to a 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town last weekend. That was their fourth consecutive match in which they failed to pick up a clean sheet – their longest run since August 2017.

The Villans have lost only once at home in 17 league games including play-offs (W11, D5, L1). However, they remain winless against Brentford in four Championship matches (D2, L2) and have last defeated them in any competition way back in 1953.

The visitors have lost only once in their last 12 Championship matches (W6, D5, L1), during which they have scored at least once in 11 matches. However, they have never won away at Villa in six matches in all competitions (D4, L2).

The attacking nature of Brentford stands out this season, with the Bees managing 14 attempts on goal in each of their last two league matches. With 12 goals in four matches this season, they have hit the ground running already.

Players to watch: John McGinn (AST) has two assists in his last two matches, while Neal Maupay has been directly involved in six of Brentford’s eight goals this season (three goals, three assists).

Stat attack: In five of the last six home league matches for Villa, there have been under 2.5 goals scored.

In six of the last seven matches between these sides, there have been under 2.5 goals scored.

Villa lost only twice at home in 23 matches last season (W14, D7, L2)

There have been under 2.5 goals scored in the last nine away league games for Brentford.

Brentford have scored 68% of their goals in the second half in their away matches last season.

ENGLAND: Championship

Stoke vs Wigan

Two teams in dire need of a confidence boost meet at the Bet365 stadium, with Stoke searching for their first home win since January, while Wigan will be gunning for their first win here since 2011.

With just two points from their opening three games, eighteenth-placed Stoke (D2, L1) could see themselves in an early-season bottom-table battle should they fail to pick up points here. A 2-2 away draw to Preston in their last game saved face, but only papered over the fact that they’ve took just 19 league points from 20 games since the turn of 2018.

A strong opener against Sheffield Wednesday saw Wigan (W1, D1, L1) placed in the top-half of the Championship table, but a 3-2 away loss to Villa gave way to a morale-killing 3-1 away cup loss, before drawing 2-2 at home to Forest. With all three of Wigan’s openers seeing over 2.5 goals, manager Paul Cook’s hopes of a second season promotional challenge may hinge on their ability to win-to-nil.

Surprisingly, these teams have only met in 29 head-to-head fixtures – with Stoke winning ten, Wigan seven, along with 12 draws.

Can manager Gary Rowett pull off a first Stoke home win against Wigan in nearly ten years? Or will Wigan get their first away points of the season after chalking up only two away losses in the whole of last season? (League One)

Players to watch: Stoke’s Benik Afobe has scored two goals in three games so far, and will go up against three-goal Nick Powell who has a goal-a-game record for Wigan.

Stat attack: These teams have five 2-2 head-to-head draws in eight previous meetings.

All seven of both teams’ combined games this season have seen over 2.5 goals scored (in all competitions).

In 25 of 37 wins under Cook since August 2017, Wigan have won-to-nil (in all comps).

EUROPE: Champions League – Qualification

MOL Vidi (Hun) vs AEK Athens FC (Gre)

It’s the first of two legs in the Champions League (CL) final qualification round, and regardless of what happens we will see an unfamiliar name in the CL group stage draw. MOL Vidi are competing to make the CL proper for the first time ever, whilst it would be AEK’s first appearance since 2006/07.

Three-time Hungarian champions Vidi, are better known by their previous name Videoton – the club was renamed this year under a new sponsorship deal. Vidi have got to this stage by scraping past all three of their opponents, most recently going through on away goals vs Malmo (1-1 on aggregate).

This will be a first meeting between these sides, and Vidi’s first game vs Greek opposition in Europe. AEK however, are winless in five away matches to Hungarian teams (D2, L3).

The Greek champions are yet to begin their domestic season, but a potential lack of match fitness wasn’t a problem as they dispatched Celtic in the last round (3-2 on aggregate).

AEK have played two fewer qualification ties than Vidi due to Greece’s higher UEFA coefficient ranking (Greece: 15, Hungary: 36).

Players to watch: Full-back Loïc Négo has found himself involved in three of Vidi’s five goals in qualifying so far (two assists, one goal).

Marko Livaja’s goal last time out for AEK sank Celtic. The Croatian forward signed a permanent deal after impressing on loan last term, when he scored eight goals in 27 league appearances.

Stat attack: Vidi have knocked out teams from higher-ranking countries in each of the last two rounds.

Five of Vidi’s six CL qualifiers so far have featured under 2.5 goals; both of AEK’s games saw both teams find the net.

Two thirds of AEK’s Greek league games last season saw under 2.5 goals scored in total (20/30), with matches averaging 2.1 goals.
