Latvia began Group B with a narrow 1-0 win over whipping boys Andorra, but have since lost five on the bounce including a 4-1 trouncing in Portugal and a 5-0 embarrassment at the hands of Georgia in a friendly last time out. They managed just the single goal across these five defeats, and with the Portuguese trailing Switzerland by three points at the top of the group the minnows can expect to face a tough time against Cristiano Ronaldo and company.
A defeat away at Switzerland put Portugal on the back foot right from the off in this qualification campaign, with the Swiss winning all five of their fixtures so far to maintain their early lead. However, they’ve been outgunned by the European Champions whose goal tally now stands at 19, with a first half hat-trick from Andre Silva versus the Faroe Islands paving the way for a 6-0 victory in their only other away match in Group B to date.
Whilst much was made of Portugal’s relatively soft route to the Euro 2016 final, with Fernando Santos’ side only managing draws in each of their group matches, they’ve proven themselves to be consistent when facing the weaker teams. They put seven past Estonia just before that tournament, and have since beaten Cyprus 4-0, Gibraltar 5-0 and both Andorra and the Faroe Islands 6-0. Latvia did manage a goal in the reverse fixture as they went down 4-1, but they’re unlikely to find the net here and we think Portugal -2 on the handicap represents good value.
Tip: Portugal -2
