Red Star Belgrade v Arsenal – Thursday

Belgrade have lost nine of their last 12 matches at home to clubs from any of Europe’s big five leagues

Red Star Belgrade have reached the main draw of a European competition for the first time since 2007/08 and they’ve picked up four points from their opening two games, putting them second behind their visitors here. However, this is a step up in class facing a side of Arsenal’s stature and in the past Serbian sides have not fared well hosting clubs from any of Europe’s big five leagues.

Since 2008/09 they’ve lost nine of 12 winless matches, conceding at least twice in all nine defeats. Moreover, we had only one of these visitors ranked in Europe’s top 20 (we currently have Arsenal 15th), and so the Gunners look excellent value.

So far, Arsene Wenger has been happy to use his fringe players in this competition and they’ve impressed with seven goals in two games. Eight of their 10 away group stage matches in Europe since 2014/15 have had at least three strikes and if we exclude sides ranked higher than them then Over 2.5 Goals has landed in all seven. They were victorious in six of these so we’re backing another Arsenal Win/Over 2.5 Goals.

Theo Walcott has not started a Premier League game this season but has lined-up in both Europa League clashes, scoring a brace in Belarus a few weeks ago where in truth he should have had at least a hat-trick. It means he now has six goals in his last four starts in Europe and looks the most likely candidate to open the scoring.
