This pair warmed up in contrasting fashion at the weekend as Dortmund were thrashed at Bayern while Monaco picked up a crucial three points at Angers to edge closer to a first French title since 2000. That defeat for Dortmund was the latest example of their poor form on the road this season but at home they’ve been formidable. They are unbeaten at the Westfalenstadion in the league this season with 10 wins from 13 matches, and it was here that they did the damage in the previous round. After losing at Benfica they won the second leg 4-0 and they have a formidable scoring potential. However, Marco Reus continues to be a big miss for the attack but they are hopeful of getting Weigl, Kagawa and Piszczek back from the weekend defeat.

There was no holding back from Monaco in the previous round as they edged out Man City in a thrilling couple of matches and going back to their qualifying rounds nine of their 12 European matches this season have seen at least three goals with both teams scoring in nine, including in five of six on the road. Like Dortmund, they are a superb attacking side and have averaged almost three goals per game domestically this term. However, they are set to be without key attacking right-back Djibril Sidibe and it’s no coincidence that they’ve averaged 0.8 goals per game less in Ligue 1 this season in the seven matches he’s failed to start, and he was also absent for the only Champions League match they failed to net in this term.

Over 2.5 Goals has been priced as short here as it’s probably ever been for a Champions League quarter-final first leg. Since 2003/04, 56% of Champions League knockout first legs have had fewer than three goals including 61% where the two teams were separated by fewer than 10 points in our gradings, as they are here. With Sidibe missing and Dortmund a touch out of sorts we’re going to take a chance on Under 2.5 Goals at a big looking 39/20.

Tip: Under 2.5
