Brian Onyango Mandela scored the decisive goal as Maritzburg United ousted Ajax Cape Town 2-1 in the Premier Soccer League on Saturday.
Fresh from solid displays in Harambee Stars’ two international friendlies with Uganda and Congo DR a 1-1 draw and 2-1 win recently, Onyango headed home from a Deolin Mekoa’s corner to make it 2-0 to the home side after Belgian forward Andrea Fileccia had given the Team of Choice the lead shortly before the interval.
Ajax did pull one back through Zambian attacker Roderick Kabwe in the 83rd minute but it was too late to stage a comeback and United held on to secure the three points which saw them return to the top-eight on the log.
Onyango’s compatriot in the South African top tier, Free State Stars’ Joseph Okumu was an unused substitute as Stars pulled a major upset, defeating their more fancied counterparts Orlando Pirates 3-2 in a thriller played at the James Motlatsi Stadium also on Saturday.
Okumu has featured seven times for Ea Lla Koto and was an unused substitute on eight occasions in only his maiden season with the Bethlehem outfit.
He last featured in the 3-1 defeat by Kaizer Chiefs in February.
